How to Get a DWG-Ready File From an iPhone Scan

Ask a designer what they actually need back from a site visit and the answer is usually a file, not a photo album. A clean, measured DWG they can open in AutoCAD and start working over. The old way to get one is to measure the room by hand, then redraw it wall by wall at your desk. That is hours of work to recreate a space that is already standing.

A phone scan collapses that step.

What You Are Really After: a Measured DWG

DWG is AutoCAD’s native drawing format. It is what most design and CAD teams live in, and it is worth being precise about the difference between DWG and DXF:

  • DXF is the open interchange format, published by Autodesk so drawings move between tools. AutoCAD opens it natively, and so does almost everything else.
  • DWG is AutoCAD’s own file. It is what your studio saves, names, and archives, and AutoCAD writes it the moment you hit save.

That second point is the one people miss. Nobody has to hand you a DWG. What you need is measured geometry AutoCAD trusts. Open the DXF, save as DWG, and the drawing is native from then on.

What Comes Out of a Scan

Scan the space once with an iPhone or iPad Pro, and every file comes from that one capture:

  • A measured 2D floor plan you can edit in the browser
  • DXF, layered and to scale, for AutoCAD, SketchUp, Vectorworks, and Chief Architect
  • IFC, the open BIM model, with walls, doors, windows, and rooms as real objects for Revit and ArchiCAD
  • E57, LAZ, and PLY point clouds. E57 is the format Autodesk ReCap reads before it hands the cloud to Revit
  • A GLB 3D model and a dimensioned PDF set with room, wall, door, and window schedules

None of it is a screenshot or a mesh you have to trace over. It is the measured geometry, written into the formats the CAD and BIM world already reads.

Scan on Site, DWG at Your Desk

  1. Scan the room. Walk it with an iPhone or iPad Pro. LiDAR picks up walls, doors, and windows with real dimensions.
  2. Clean the plan up. Open the measured plan in the web editor, nudge walls, name rooms, and check dimensions against what you captured.
  3. Export DXF. The layered CAD file comes out of that same plan, at scale.
  4. Open it in AutoCAD and save as DWG. Apply your layer standards, save, and the file is native from that point on.
  5. Add IFC or E57 when the job calls for them. IFC when the project runs through Revit or ArchiCAD, E57 when you want the point cloud itself in ReCap to model against.

Why Export Instead of Re-drawing

Two reasons. First, time. A scan-to-CAD service bureau commonly charges thousands per residential job and takes two to four weeks. A phone scan is same day, and the export is a click. Second, ownership. With most services you hand over the capture and get a file back. Here the scan, the point cloud, and every export stay yours to keep and reuse, and you can pull the E57 whenever you want.

That combination, measured geometry inside your own tool plus a point cloud you own, is the part that is hard to get anywhere else.

What You Need, and an Honest Word on Accuracy

Capture needs an iPhone Pro or iPad Pro, because those are the models with the LiDAR sensor the scan relies on. That is the whole kit. No terrestrial scanner, no dedicated camera.

The scan is centimeter-class: room-scale captures typically land within a couple of centimeters over a normal room, which is the right band for renovation, space planning, and design documentation. It is not a survey-grade terrestrial scanner, so treat the scan the way you would treat any field survey and verify code-driven or fabrication-driven dimensions against a tape or laser before you build on them.

The Workflow

Manual:        measure on site → redraw in AutoCAD → start design
Scan to DWG:   scan on site → export DXF → open in AutoCAD → start design

The steps that disappear are the ones that add no value: the field measuring and the redraw of a room that already exists.

What to Pull Out of This

  • DWG and DXF are not the same file, but they are one save apart. Export the DXF, open it in AutoCAD, save as DWG.
  • One iPhone Pro scan produces the floor plan, DXF, IFC, E57, LAZ, PLY, GLB, and a dimensioned PDF set, all from the same measured geometry.
  • The exports are same day and far cheaper than a service bureau, and you keep the scan and the point cloud instead of handing them off.
  • iPhone Pro or iPad Pro is required for capture. Verify critical dimensions against the field, the same as any survey.
